Think About It

He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

When does your life begin?

I was watching a documentary earlier today - passing in and out of consciousness because I'm coming down with a cold.

Then the narrator said something that forced me to open my eyes, which I'll paraphrase here:

A man's life has started long before he is born.

Is that true? I think in many ways it is. Now it doesn't apply as a blanket statement, but there's truth in it. We each make decisions that determine where our lives go. So, yes, we still bear responsibility.

However, to a certain extent, our collective lives were determined before we were ever born. What does that say about your life? Can you see where that might be true for you? If so, what does that say about your life?

Just questions. If you don't agree, then simply look down at your feet. Your socks are the proof.

  1. This opens a huge can of worms... because depending upon your religious views your theory may be different. Several of my friends are Mormon... they believe that we lived life in Heaven prior to this and that in order for us to truly appreciate Heaven we had to come to Earth and experience "life".

Personally, I find that hard to swallow because then you'd have to contend with other Eastern religions that tend to flow that same way... ie reincarnation theory. They believe that you are in "paradise" they you come to earth to live and depending on how you life you may return to paradise or you will return to life in another form.

For myself... I believe that our lives were "scheduled" we would be born on a certain date, but the date we die is TBD. Based on the choices we make and the way we live our life... that may be shorter or longer. Now even this idea is somewhat wild, because others will say well then why did my 11 month old child die. To that I say... that she served her purpose. I won't go as far as to say that God has us in a tool box and He uses us as He needs to, but sometimes things are brought into our life then taken in order to make us aware of things around us.

as far as the socks comment... you plan your life... that wasn't something that was predetermined...before you were born.

    Just my two cents

  2. Ahhhh! About those socks. We wear them. Now that was determined for us. One of my daughters got a pair of Texas Longhorn socks as a gift when she was born. She's now a Longhorn fan.
    Gotta love it!

  3. I truly feel that our lives are predetermined in many ways not all but many. Some people are born with birth defects that can make life in some ways a living Hell they can't do the things that they feel that they should have a God giving right to do, some people are born into poverty which makes trying to dream big a make believe fairy tale.
There are other areas in life where I feel that we are guided by a force in the midst of prayers that we pray or that others have prayed over us.
In my own life I have always felt that there's a supper natural force that has always been there/here for me thru the good and bad.

  4. I believe that my life begins from the moment of fertilization or from the moment I was conceived in my mother womb. A since then I am “a human”. I think this is the appropriate time to say “my life begun”. I don’t give a chance to anyone to tell me otherwise, because it would be underestimating of the embryological stage of the life.
Many countries in the world, religion institutions and churches condemn Abortion, as the reason it is a crime of killing a human. In the United States other advanced (pro-democratic countries) the issue of Abortion is exceedingly controversial.
Hence, to me, no other moment that Life begins apart from in the mother’s womb at the embryology phase.

  5. Knowledge of thyself is the knowlege of life; and since knowledge is infinite, the journey is living it. Once you know who you are then you know your purpose, and only in finding your purpose is finding life. Therefore, I think we start living out life when we know that what we are living for.
